Overview

Well, that is not a big deal... what do I need it for anyway? you may say. Unfortunately it is hard or impossible to create a web site, web application or a desktop application without the necessary technical specifications. Those include, but are not limited to:

• product specifications - which define the specifications of the whole product; those can be used by marketing for example and are the basic, top specifications
• system specifications - which define the requirements of the systems involved (servers, workstations etc.) as well as perquisites, assumptions, enhancements and facts for them; for example if the application to be build will run only on Internet Explorer on Windows 2003 it will have specific requirements and also several enhancements and restrictions comparing to an application designed to run on Mozilla Firefox on a Linux system
• functional specifications - which define the specifications of the whole product from the functionality and coding point of view, like how modules integrate, how security-sensitive data should be handled etc.; those are to be used by the developers and they are the base for the system specifications and technical designs
• technical designs - which describe for a developer a given piece of the project, like the functionality of a module or of a single page or screen (depending on the necessary granularity)
• layout designs - they are usually included in the technical designs, but sometimes you need those separated as global specifications for the whole application
